Tutor  Sally Stephens

"Very helpful instructor and a good working environment. It's nice to see so many original printing presses." September 2019

During this morning course you will learn how to create a suitable design and transfer it onto your lino block. Then cut and print your block using the Britannia relief press and take the prints home.

A great introduction to relief printing, suitable for those with some print experience, or new to the medium. We will also demonstrate printing your block by hand, something that can be done at home without a press.

Course Structure

  • Introduction to linocut. Looking at examples of work, cut blocks and prints.
  • Work on designing an image suitable for linocut.
  • Demonstration of how to transfer the design.
  • When designs complete, demonstration of how to cut the block.
  • Work on blocks
  • When complete, demonstration of inking up the block and using the press.
  • Tidy up and evaluation.

About the Tutor

Sally Stephens uses the intaglio processes of etching and drypoint in her practice and also some screen print. Her work frequently explores the human face and its enduring fascination. Crowds and collections of faces provide a way to think about how the individual relates to a group, and consider the connections between people. Work is also inspired by travel and encountered images, for example Greek and Roman sculpture and busy city streets.

Sally has completed an Advanced Diploma in Printmaking at Central St Martins School of Art and an M A in printmaking at Northampton University. Sally is part of the LPW tutor team and has also delivered several community projects.
