Intaglio 4 x 4 Evening Course

Over the four weeks, each three hour session introduces you to different intaglio print processes – Drypoint, hard ground Etching, soft ground Etching and Aquatint.

You will learn what intaglio print is, how to make your plates each week and how to print using LPW’s etching presses. Through the tutor’s demonstration, you will learn how the plates are etched with acid and how aquatint is applied.

Where possible, plates will have been prepared by technician/tutor ready for you to get on with your drawing, to save your time. Suitable for both beginners and those wishing to refresh themselves in using the etching area at LPW.

Course Structure

Week 1: Drypoint

18.00: Introduction and example

18:15 - 19:15: Demonstration of how to make plate, then make your plate

19.15 - 20:15: Demonstration how to ink up and print, then print your artwork

20.15: optional activity: Chine-collé

20.40: Demonstration how to clean up, then clean up, tidy up and pack up.

Week 2: Hard ground etching

18.00: Introduction and example

18.15 - 18.45: Preparation of the plate

18.45 - 19.30: Make plate (draw), and etch the plate

19.30 - 20.40: Print your plate, explore Chine-collé

20.40: Clean up, preparation for the week 3

Week 3: Aquatint

18.00: Introduction and example

18.15 - 18.30: See demonstration of aquatint application

18.30 - 21.45: Make and etch plate, then print

13.45: Clean up

Week 4: Soft ground etching

18.00: Introduction and example

18.15 - 18.45: Demonstration, plan, prepare and make your plate

18.45 - 19.00: Get the plate etched

19.00 - 20.40: Print, and if you have time print the other plates that you made in the previous weeks

20.40: Clean up, tidy, pack up and evaluation

About the Tutor

Sumiko Eadon is an artist based in Leicestershire. She studied Fine Art at Loughborough University as a mature student. Since her graduation in 2013, she has developed her portfolio through residencies and has exhibited regionally and beyond. This includes AA2A at the University of Derby, LPW’s ‘Our Big Move’ residency, Surface Gallery graduate residency, Nottingham Castle Open, Flourish Award exhibition, the National Original Print Exhibition, London and a solo exhibition at New Art Exchange, Nottingham. She works as a freelance printmaking tutor and has worked for LPW, West Yorkshire Print Workshop, LU Arts and The New Art Gallery Walsall.

Leicester Print Workshop 

Leicester Print Workshop is the regional development centre for printmaking. Established by artists in 1986, we are a registered charity, supported by Arts Council England. Our RIBA award-winning building is situated in Leicester City Centre's Cultural Quarter and is home to a large, well equipped open access Printmaking Studio.

We have over 30 years’ experience of teaching people printmaking. Our programme offers the largest number and broadest range of printmaking courses in the region, with courses suitable for beginners as well as experienced printmakers, delivered by practicing artists and nationally renowned tutors. Participants learn in small and friendly groups in our purpose-designed studio.
