Suman will use her printmaking and poetry practice to explore how journeys can manifest as images. Using colours which hold significance to participants, on day one you will learn how to monoprint your designs using Khadi paper from India and on day two you will transform your prints into concertina sketchbooks and 3D forms, further embellishing them with inks and stitches to produce beautiful 3d printed bookforms.

Course structure

Day 1

You will learn about monoprint through table top printing and also, with the studio press. You will use colours that are significant to you. You will also print small concertina sketchbooks made from Khadi paper from India. The work will be allowed to dry overnight.

Day 2

You will use the monoprints to make a mini-installation of paper boats, symbolising our journeys. You will work over the concertina books with stitch and inks to create decorative works which can stand on alone Suman will read some of her poems at the end of day 2.

About the tutor

During her MA, Suman’s research into the history of printmaking in India revealed the impact of the 1947 Partition of India on all aspects of life on the sub-continent and on her own family’s history which inspired a deeper interest in the effect of local and global traumas on individuals and communities.

This led to Suman’s current work on the migrant crisis and its roots. These issues can be painful to think about but she believes that artists are in a unique position to act as agents for change by provoking conversations through their work.

Suman makes abstract work, stemming from her own response but which can be interpreted by the viewer from their own perspective.

The Whitworth has acquired Suman's work All My Sorrows for their permanent collection and given poetry readings in many places , including Tara Theatre, at Chelsea Art College, the Whitworth, Portico Library.

Suman has run workshops at Fitzwilliam; Warwick Arts Centre, National Migration Museum, and at St Albans Museum as well schools and community centres. She is also

the curatorial committee for St Albans Musrum and on a development group for a show at the Horniman next year

Leicester Print Workshop

Leicester Print Workshop is the regional development centre for printmaking. Established by artists in 1986, we are a registered charity, supported by Arts Council England. Our RIBA award-winning building is situated in Leicester City Centre's Cultural Quarter and is home to a large, well equipped open access Printmaking Studio.

We have over 30 years’ experience of teaching people printmaking. Our programme offers the largest number and broadest range of printmaking courses in the region, with courses suitable for beginners as well as experienced printmakers, delivered by practicing artists and nationally renowned tutors. Participants learn in small and friendly groups in our purpose-designed studio.
