Large Scale Etching on Steel

This course offers a rare opportunity to take your etching to the next level as you are supported to take your  first steps working on a large scale.

You will work on a 500 x 625mm steel plate for three days exploring; hardground, alternative resists , burnishing and monotype inking to create a sustained series of large scale stage proofs.

This is an exciting intermediate course is for those wanting to extend their understanding of etching, the material properties of an alternative metal plate, expansion in scale and to build upon their existing skills. There is an emphasis on drawn work and experimentation.

Course Structure

DAY 1

• Introduction to course/ session outline/ H&S
• Introduction to contemporary artist working with large scale etchings
• Discussion with examples of techniques using examples and participants work
• Demo’s and recap: How prepare your plate, Hard ground, Alternative resists, Soap grounds         
• Individual work supported by tutor 1:1’s – planning images & plate preparation
• Draw/ etch  plate
• Registration demonstration/ preparing paper/ inks and wiping techniques / practical registration on the press / flattening prints

DAY 2

• Individual work supported by tutor 1:1’s – technical demonstrations as needed
• Alternative resists / burnishing / monotype inking
• You will re -draw / re-work / etch and proof your plate

DAY 3

• Individual work supported by tutor 1:1’s – technical demonstrations as needed
• You will re -draw / re-work / etch and proof your plate
• Clean up
• Evaluation and finish

NB: Basic materials will be provided but you may wish to purchase additional plates and paper.

About the Tutor

Sue Baker Kenton is a visual artist whose work is rooted in observational drawing. Her images evolve over time in a considered and reflective way, echoed by the processes in which they are rendered: primarily etching and lithography. After completing her masters Sue received Arts Council funding, which enabled her to study Stone Lithography at the Curwen Print Studio. She was Artist-in-Residence at LPW 2012-13 and in 2016 Sue was appointed etching fellow at Royal Academy Schools. In recent years she has undertaken research trips to Crown Point Press, San Francisco, to Art Print Residence, Barcelona and has completed annual drawing residencies in Reims and Tarn since 2017. In 2021 she received Arts Council DYCP funding and in 2022 visited Frans Masereel Print Centruum, Belgium as part of their collaborative residency programme. Her work is regularly selected for open exhibitions and public collections include the Victoria & Albert Museum's Word & Image Department.

Leicester Print Workshop 

Leicester Print Workshop is the regional development centre for printmaking. Established by artists in 1986, we are a registered charity, supported by Arts Council England. Our RIBA award-winning building is situated in Leicester City Centre's Cultural Quarter and is home to a large, well equipped open access Printmaking Studio.

We have over 30 years’ experience of teaching people printmaking. Our programme offers the largest number and broadest range of printmaking courses in the region, with courses suitable for beginners as well as experienced printmakers, delivered by practicing artists and nationally renowned tutors. Participants learn in small and friendly groups in our purpose-designed studio.
