This comprehensive course is designed for beginners and experienced artists alike, offering an introduction to the expressive potential of colour in Linocut printmaking.
We will be looking at ways to make vibrant colour combinations with a limited palette of 2 or 3 colours per print. There will be discussions around how to use colour theory in your work and how to mix printing inks to create personalised colour schemes. Discover the power of colour to evoke emotion and convey meaning with valuable feedback and guidance from an experienced relief printmaker and artist.
10.00 Start Course, tutor introduction
10.10 Students use drawing pencil to make a 3 tone drawing- Simplify tone in photos
10.30 Students make three tone colour drawing with coloring pencils/ felt tip- Start to understand how colour and tone are related. Starting to think about colour separation
11.00 Look at colour theory and how that can be used in printmaking. Discovering advantageous colour combinations
11.15 Sketching colour ideas with a limited palette
11.45 Mixing colour with printing inks, learn how to stop using colours straight out of the tube.
12.00 Make two new colour and test print. Practice over laying colours to see how they react to each other
1.30 Students to start working a new print of their choosing out experiment with a print they have already made.
2.00 Demo how to use press and inking up.

About the Tutor
Jonathan Costall is a Printmaker who specialises in Linocut portraits. Currently he is working on a series of portraits which combines his duel passions of art and football. The main subject of his work has been Leicester City F.C players past and present, recently he has started a second series of portraits of “Football Greats”.
He studied BA (hons) Fine Art at De Montfort University where he decided to specialise in Printmaking. After graduating he then went on to study at Wimbledon School of Art where he gained an MA in Fine Art Printmaking in 2005.

Leicester Print Workshop is the regional development centre for printmaking. Established by artists in 1986, we are a registered charity, supported by Arts Council England. Our RIBA award-winning building is situated in Leicester City Centre's Cultural Quarter and is home to a large, well equipped open access Printmaking Studio.
We have over 30 years’ experience of teaching people printmaking. Our programme offers the largest number and broadest range of printmaking courses in the region, with courses suitable for beginners as well as experienced printmakers, delivered by practicing artists and nationally renowned tutors. Participants learn in small and friendly groups in our purpose-designed studio.
