Coronavirus Update: This course has been postponed from June 2020 and will be running with reduced numbers and new social distancing, hygiene and safety measures in place [as of 16th June].

An inspiring weekend looking specifically at producing a two-layered screenprinted textiles design. Using your own drawing skills and mark-making techniques, create a multi-directional A3 print, that captures your own personal aesthetic whilst learning about colour and composition.

Creating your own design, learn how to expose it onto a screen and then use it to print onto fabric. Explore a variety of heatpress techniques such as foiling, flocking, puff binder and disperse dyes to embellish designs and introduce different surfaces and textures. Experiment with open screens to look at how to layer designs and colour to produce diverse samples.

Participants will leave the course with a variety of textile samples.

Course Structure

  • Introduction to the course and discuss the intended outcomes for the weekend.
  • Look at inspiration for textiles designs, regarding composition and colour.
  • Using the art work you have brought along as a starting point, begin to create a multi directional print design to A3 size, consisting of two-layers.
  • Hand draw your design onto acetate, considering the use of line and mark making to create an interesting textural design. Learn to register the two-layers using cross points.
  • Coat large screens, expose finished designs onto the screens using the exposure unit and prepare to print. Mix fabric print pastes in your colour palette using primary colours only.
  • Demonstration of how to print.
  • Practice printing and layering the screens onto calico fabric.
  • Experiment with colours.
  • Demonstration in how foiling/flocking and puff binder is applied to the fabric using the heatpress. Experiment in how these can be applied to your design.
  • Print final samples onto fabric.
