Coronavirus Update: This course has been postponed from April 2020 and will be running with reduced numbers and new social distancing, hygiene and safety measures in place [as of 2nd September]. 

Inspired by artists such as Agnes Martin, Ad Reinhardt and Barnett Newman, this course deals with finding the essential composition for a series of abstract/geometric shapes and lines.

The tutor will work with you to create images that appear simple, considered and have a playful sense of aesthetic pleasure.

You will learn kamihanga and drypoint to make simple and attractive prints with an emphasis on contemplative design, detail, precision and clean execution.

Course Structure

AM: -

  • Introduction to drypoint (10-10.30)
  • Demonstration of making plates and printing (10.30-11.00)
  • Make your own drypoint plates with simple lines and print it (11.00-12.00)
  • Clean up (12.00-12.30)

PM: -

  • Introduction to kamihanga (1.30-1.45)
  • Demonstration of making plates and printing (1.45-2.00)
  • Make your own kamihanga plates and print
  • Play with arrangement of the simple shapes and explore and experiment with space. (2.00-3.30)
  • Cleaning up and evaluation (3.30-4.00)

About the Tutor

Sumiko Eadon is an artist based in Leicestershire. She studied Fine Art in Loughborough University as a mature student. Since her graduation in 2013, she has developed her portfolio through residencies and has exhibited regionally and beyond. This includes AA2A at the University of Derby, LPW’s ‘Our Big Move’ residency, Surface Gallery graduate residency, Nottingham Castle Open, Flourish Award exhibition, the National Original Print Exhibition, London and a solo exhibition at New Art Exchange, Nottingham. She works as a freelance printmaking tutor and has worked for LPW, West Yorkshire Print Workshop, LU Arts and The New Art Gallery Walsall.

Leicester Print Workshop 

Leicester Print Workshop is the regional development centre for printmaking. Established by artists in 1986, we are a registered charity, supported by Arts Council England. Our RIBA award-winning building is situated in Leicester City Centre's Cultural Quarter and is home to a large, well equipped open access Printmaking Studio.

We have over 30 years’ experience of teaching people printmaking. Our programme offers the largest number and broadest range of printmaking courses in the region, with courses suitable for beginners as well as experienced printmakers, delivered by practicing artists and nationally renowned tutors. Participants learn in small and friendly groups in our purpose-designed studio.
