In this workshop artist film maker Vicky Smith will guide you to make creative marks, splashes and scratches directly on to a piece of filmstrip using a variety of materials and body parts to make unique handmade cinema which extends the usual notions of physical film vocabulary. We will consider the materials and context of the genre and cover methods and approaches, such as animation and frameless-ness and formal elements such as pattern, texture and rhythm, and we'll watch your handmade films together.
DAY 1
10.00: TALK meet, introductions overview
10.30: TALK introduction to my work part 1: How I got started in handmade film
11: 30: DEMO first steps - 16mm filmstrip fundamentals with a focus on clear leader
12: 00 ACTIVITY: Group practice with clear film loop, in small groups to a theme.
14:00: SCREENING/DISCUSSION : works on clear film including Dresden Dynamo; Nosy Licking
15: 00: DEMO tools and methods
15: 30 ACTIVITY: complete loop and screen it
DAY 2:
10.00: TALK introduction to my work part 2: body as printing machine
11: 00: DEMO: Refining & controlling marks & consideration of pace and the role of sound
12:00: ACTIVITY: Group construction of black film loop
14:00: SCREENING/DISCUSSION: works on black film Primal; Small Things Moving in Unison; Free Radicals by Len Lye Aldo Tambellini
15: 00: ACTIVITY: complete loop and screen it
DAY 3: Monday
10: 00: DEMO: TECHNOLOGIES 16mm splicer; 16mm projector
11:00: ACTIVITY: individual work on strips and/or loops with possible inclusion of found footage and fogged neg
15:00: SCREENING/DISCUSSION of all work made
About the Tutor
Vicky Smith is an artist film maker and academic who has worked in experimental animation and 16mm film for 30 years and has screened work internationally in galleries and at festivals.
Vicky was part of the London Film Makers Co-op, has a PhD in experimental film, is co-founder of artist collective Bristol Experimental Expanded Film (BEEF) in Bristol and lectures at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham.
Leicester Print Workshop
Leicester Print Workshop is the regional development centre for printmaking. Established by artists in 1986, we are a registered charity, supported by Arts Council England. Our RIBA award-winning building is situated in Leicester City Centre's Cultural Quarter and is home to a large, well equipped open access Printmaking Studio.
We have over 30 years’ experience of teaching people printmaking. Our programme offers the largest number and broadest range of printmaking courses in the region, with courses suitable for beginners as well as experienced printmakers, delivered by practicing artists and nationally renowned tutors. Participants learn in small and friendly groups in our purpose-designed studio.
