Tutor Leigh Burrows

A thorough introduction into the historic cyanotype process, the first photographic printmaking process discovered in 1842. You will learn how to make and prepare your plate, the photochemical processes of preparing your paper and exposure times and methods, and making it all work to produce beautiful deep blue prints.

Course Structure

The workshop would begin with an explanation of the process, with examples of images so produced. Think about the materials used to create an image. These may be small objects that have clearly defined edges to create hard outlines, or more organic materials such as flower and leaves

  • The variability of the process will be discussed – length of exposure time, strength of the light etc., and a demonstration of an image produced. Participants will think about the composition of the image. Participants will be using mostly pre-prepared sheets which are A4 in size (or a smaller size if required).
  • We will also look at the process of making a plate, and this will lead into the first activity, which will be the participants’ opportunity to make some light-sensitive paper to use later in the workshop.
  • The participants will then use pre-prepared paper to make prints -arranging the composition on the light-sensitive paper and expose to sunlight or UV light, watching how the paper changes colour, and using judgement to stop the process. The paper can then be rinsed and left to dry, allowing the image to fully develop.
  • Finally participants can use their own prepared paper, and come together to look at what has been produced, discussing the variations produced.

About the Tutor

Leigh Burrows began printmaking after moving to the Calder valley, being inspired by the steep-sided wooded valleys and the rushing water of the Calder river.  Leigh is home-based and produces monoprints, cyanotypes and collages using water- and oil- based inks and a variety of papers. Her style is abstract and often colourful, but black ink has also featured widely in her latest prints.
