Join artist and educator, Rahel Zoller, for a hands-on introduction to book binding. Working with a variety of different papers, you will be taught different techniques to fold and manipulate paper to create a set of hand-crafted books - a pamphlet, do-si-do, Coptic stitch and stab stitch bound.
Course Structure
Morning
- During the morning, participants will learn how to fold and manipulate paper using specialist bookbinding tools and will learn three simple book structures.
- Introduction and examples
- Demonstration of Pamphlet binding, Do-si-Do binding and Stab-binding.
- The workshop will run with sequenced demonstrations and in between the participants get the time to follow the instructions.
- Cleaning up and evaluation
Afternoon
- The afternoon will cover basic materials and techniques for making a Coptic binding with exposed/sewn spine. In Coptic binding the covers are sewn in conjunction with the pages. The thread creates a beautiful continuous loop pattern across the pages.

About the Tutor
Rahel Zoller lives and works in London as Visual Artist and Book Arts and Design specialist and educator. She studied at Goldsmiths and University of the Arts London and since October 2015 has been a member of ABC (Artists’ Books Cooperative) Rahel specialises in artists’ books which explore concepts of language, translation, reading and writing as well as the interaction between user, creator and society.
Her works have been published and exhibited internationally and are held in a number of collections such as the MoMA Artists' Books collection in New York, Artists' Books Tate Library Collection, the Booklet Library in Tokyo, the Museum of the Manuscripts of Mont-Saint-Michel in France, the Research Centre for Artists’ Publications in Weserburg Bremen Germany and at the archive at MACBA in Barcelona, Spain.
Leicester Print Workshop
Leicester Print Workshop is the regional development centre for printmaking. Established by artists in 1986, we are a registered charity, supported by Arts Council England. Our RIBA award-winning building is situated in Leicester City Centre's Cultural Quarter and is home to a large, well equipped open access Printmaking Studio.
We have over 30 years’ experience of teaching people printmaking. Our programme offers the largest number and broadest range of printmaking courses in the region, with courses suitable for beginners as well as experienced printmakers, delivered by practicing artists and nationally renowned tutors. Participants learn in small and friendly groups in our purpose-designed studio.
